ALOK: Live as your fullest, freest self

"The reason that people are seeking to oppress you is not because you are weak or fragile. It's precisely because you're powerful and tremendous."

Those words—spoken by poet and comedian ALOK at this year’s Free Future—ring true on this Transgender Day of Remembrance. Trans people face mounting violence around the world, but as ALOK said onstage, that violence stems from their visibility, and fearless pursuit of simply being themselves.

Known as a Shakespearean level wordsmith with a wicked sense of humor, ALOK has performed in over 40 countries and was the subject of the documentary ALOK, which premiered this year at the Sundance Film Festival.
